Recently, I remembered #DettyDecember. When I tell you this hashtag was trending in Nigeria in December 2018, I’m not joking. What this hashtag entailed was people traveling to luxurious countries like Dubai and taking pictures (maybe to pepper us or maybe to just document their experiences). Whatever the case may be, if you were not careful, you’d find yourself feeling intimidated or experiencing FOMO (fear of missing out).
That time, I was just looking at the pictures some of these influencers and non-influencers were posting and was like, oh man, I want to travel to Seychelles too oh😂. At that time all my #dettydecembers went down in Ghana😂. Anyways, by January, there was this joke going around that people that went on Detty Decembers, were experiencing sober January’s😂.
I said all of this to say, by all means, enjoy your youth. Life is not even that deep. Like you worked hard to make that money so, why wouldn’t you enjoy it. In actuality, if you don’t enjoy it, someone will enjoy it for you. However, the advice I’m consciously giving myself regularly is: “Detty December is for one month but sober January can last 12 months.” What this means is your financial decisions during this coming festive month can affect your entire year- the following year. I'm yet to wear a lot of clothes I’ve bought in the name of Christmas clothes😭.
I’m learning to not make decisions in the thick of things. I’m learning to ride things out for as long as is practicable and revisit those decisions when I’m no longer in the heat of things, and I know my future self will thank me for it. This December, try to do things differently to see if you’ll get better results with your finances the following year.
